Technology Trumps Teachers?

As a technophile and a teacher this article is both exciting and a little scary at the same time.  Implementing a 1:1 laptop program allowed schools to increase their test scores (exciting) while laying-off teachers (scary).  The key quote:

“Though the loss of 37 teaching jobs resulted in larger class sizes — now 30 instead of 18 — district officials told the paper the technology helps teachers manage their classes more efficiently.”

I wonder what would have happened if they had been able to buy laptops without laying off any teachers.  Would the improvement have been even more dramatic?  Or are we getting into an age where with technology’s help, we don’t need as many teachers?  Like Arthur C. Clark said, “Any teacher that can be replaced by a machine should be!”

(Will stories like this reverse the roles, making administrators more enthusiastic about laptops and teachers less so?)
